The Mountain Kingdom
Most Travellers
Never Find

Lesotho sits entirely above 1,000 metres β€” and almost no backpacker trail goes there deliberately. Nala Ventures built the on-ramp in, with real local guides, community homestays, and adventures that give back.

Lesotho is the only country on Earth that sits entirely above 1,000 metres. Locals call it the Kingdom in the Sky β€” and almost every Southern Africa backpacker trail routes straight past it.

"We want to create a real on-ramp into the Mountain Kingdom, where the community benefits directly from sustainable backpacker footprint."

Nala Ventures & Travels began with a simple observation: while neighboring regions thrive on well-worn tourism circuits, Lesotho's deep interior, high mountain trails, and rich cultural fabrics remain almost untouched by typical maps.

Operating out of Maseru, we run both a basecamp environment and specialized transit networks connecting you safely from major hubs like Johannesburg or Sani Pass directly into local hosts' doorsteps.

Before You Go

Common Questions

Everything you need to know before crossing into the Kingdom in the Sky.

Most nationalities (including South Africa, EU, UK, USA, Canada, Australia) get a free 30-day entry stamp at the border. No advance visa required. We handle all the paperwork guidance and border formalities as part of your tour package.
Lesotho is a year-round destination. Summer (October–March) brings lush green highlands and waterfalls at full flow. Winter (May–August) offers snow-capped peaks and crystal-clear skies β€” dramatic for hiking and photography. We advise bringing warm layers regardless of season as temperatures drop sharply at altitude after dark.
Maseru is roughly 4–5 hours by road from Johannesburg (via the Maseru Bridge border post) and around 5–6 hours from Durban. We can arrange pickup from Johannesburg, assist with shared shuttle connections, or coordinate your arrival if you're coming via Sani Pass. Just let us know your situation when you book.
Sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots, a warm fleece or jacket (even in summer), sunscreen (the altitude amplifies UV), a reusable water bottle, and a rain layer. For overnight homestays, pack light β€” rondavels are cosy but space is modest. We provide blankets and bedding.
Lesotho's highland communities are famously welcoming to travellers. As with anywhere, common sense applies in urban Maseru β€” don't walk alone late at night with valuables on display. On all our tours you are with a local guide throughout, and our basecamp is secure and well-monitored. Solo travellers are a big part of our guest community.
Lesotho uses the Lesotho Loti (LSL), which is pegged 1:1 to the South African Rand. Rand is also widely accepted. ATMs are available in Maseru. Card acceptance is limited outside of town, so we recommend having some cash for village purchases and tips. Tour payments can be arranged via EFT or cash.
